As an avid baseball fan, it is hard to not know about uber-agent Scott Boras. From players like Rick Ankiel, Jeff Weaver, and Rodrigo Lopez to players like A-Rod, Barry Zito, and Carlos Beltran, Scott Boras has a client list that would rival all-star teams. He is known for his ability to squeeze every last dollar out of a team and will revert to things like opting out of contract and creating bidding wars between super power to drive up costs. He is all that is good and bad with baseball.
Not only a sports agent, he is also a man with a good deal of opinions. Most fall on deaf ears, such as his great idea to expand the World Series to nine games. Oddly, about 3 weeks ago he made a really good observation. He thought that his client, Daisuke Matsuzaka, should have is load lessen. He told the Boston Globe that he would "rather see him throw closer to 100 pitches than 120 pitches." I have noticed that Matsuzaka has been pitching late into games, but i never really looked up the numbers. What i saw was sort of shocking. Daisuke ranks 2nd in baseball in PAPs. For a good definition of PAPs read here. Basically PAPs stands for Pitchers Abuse points and it tracks how many pitches a pitcher makes after a certain number of pitches. For instance, someone pitching 120 pitches gets more abuse points than someone that pitches 100.
In Baseball Between the Numbers, the guys at BP talk about why a pitcher wares down. Essentially, they establish that pitchers get hurt when they pitch while being tired. Most pitcher start to tire after 100 pitcher. Daisuke is pitching over that amount very frequently. So for one time i will say this, I agree with Scott Boras. He is very correct in his assessment that Daisuke should pitch less. When have him signed long term, he is young, and a great talent. There is no need for him to be burnt out by 29. I really hope Tito and Theo will heed the words of this annoying man and do the right thing.
